Madison Fire District will be accepting applications for the position of full -time Firefighter/Paramedic. The officer corps of Madison Fire District will review the completed application materials. Candidates selected to continue with the process following the officer review will be invited to sit for a written examination.  Successful candidates will be recommended for employment based upon the needs of the district taking into consideration the entirety of a candidate’s work experience, background investigation, interview results, and test score(s).  Final approval of employment is at the discretion of the Madison Fire District Board of Trustees.

All applicants must attain the age of eighteen (18) years of age on or before the date of application and are required to be a State of Ohio Certified Paramedic and State of Ohio Firefighter Level II on the date of hire. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and in good mental and physical health, achieved a high school diploma or equivalent (GED), and have a valid driver’s license.

The starting salary for a new hire with Ohio Firefighter 2 Certification and an Ohio Paramedic
Certification is $69,531.44. District benefits include Health Care (employee participation),
prescription, dental, vision, membership in the Ohio Police & Fire Pension Fund, vacation,
eleven (11) Kelly Days, sick leave, and select paid holidays.

All applicants not already in the Ohio Police and Fire Pension Fund, will need to submit a valid
certificate of completion by the time of hire from the Firefighters Physical Agility Test
administered by Cuyahoga Community College or Auburn Career Center.

Overview

The Full-time Firefighter is responsible for supervising the activities of part-time Fire District
personnel, overseeing station and equipment checks and maintenance on his/her assigned shift
under the general direction of the, Lieutenant, Captain, Assistant Chief, and Fire Chief here-in
referred to as the Chain of Command.

Responsibilities & Essential Duties

  • Carries out duties in conformance with Federal, State, County, Township, Village, and
    District laws and resolutions
  • Enforces District rules and regulations pertaining to station functions; report malfunctions
    of equipment or non-conformance of rules and regulations following the Chain of
    Command.
  • Assumes all duties and responsibilities for the safety and welfare of personnel in-house
    and on-scene or until formally relieved by a higher ranking officer.
  • In the absence of a Lieutenant, conduct periodic inspections on the condition and
    maintenance of quarters, uniforms, and equipment of the Fire District; schedule daily
    work details for maintenance and cleaning of quarters and equipment.
  • Supervise subordinates
  • Advise personnel of policy and procedure changes.
  • In the absence of an officer conducts morning briefing of on-coming shift personnel.
  • Provide appropriate briefing of higher ranking officers in reference to staffing, out of
    service equipment, injuries etc. via Chain of Command
  • Participates in the daily District in-service training activities
  • Maintain adequate records for responsibilities and assignments
  • In the absence of an officer schedule daily projects for personnel as required
  • Participate in all firefighting and EMS functions as required or mandated and function at
    the level of certification you are compensated for.
  • In the absence of an officer responsible for accuracy of FIRE and EMS reports during
    shift and any other required reports
  • Responsible to maintain and provide copies of minimal certifications such as EMT-P, CPR, ACLS (as required) and any other Fire District mandated certifications
  • Perform an Annual Self Evaluation
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Detailed knowledge of Ohio’s Fire Code, property maintenance and building codes
  • Knowledge of fire inspection and arson investigation procedures
  • Knowledge of incident command training, modern fire suppression and prevention
    training, and principles, procedures, techniques and equipment of Emergency Medical
    Services and protocols
  • Knowledgeable of applicable laws, resolutions, and Fire District Standard Operating
    Guidelines, Policies and Procedures
  • Required to take and pass an annual District physical
  • Submit to and pass drug and alcohol screening/testing when required
  • Ability to be covered by the driving insurance provided to the District
  • Ability to demonstrate all required Firefighting and EMS competencies
  • Ability to be at work and ready to work “on-time.”
  • Successfully complete all District required training per SOP’s and SOG’s
  • Knowledge and understanding of: Madison Fire District Mission Statement, Core Values,
    and the “Madison Fire District Way”

Required Education, Certifications & Experience

  • State of Ohio Driver’s License
  • Should have been a Part-time Firefighter for the Madison Fire District or a minimum of 3
    years Firefighter/EMT-P experience
  • Shall have and maintain certification as a EMT-P
  • Shall have and maintain certification as a Firefighter Level II
  • Shall maintain certifications used at the time of hire for additional points during the hiring
    process
  • Shall have and maintain NIMS minimum required training for the position
